あげはちゃん。
Hello (^-^)Ｑです。
ちょっと前の話ですが、１１月１７日、今年も
大分国際車いすマラソンが開催されました。
県庁前をスタートしてすぐ、リトルアメリカ大分校の
前を選手が通過するので、私も毎年必ず沿道に出て、
応援させてもらっています。
私は声の大きさには、職業柄、まあまあ自信が
ある？！ので、すごく大きな声をはりあげて応援する
んですが、とにかく、車いすマラソンの選手は
速い！！！
シャーッッとすごい迫力・速さで通り過ぎていきます。
なんのスポーツでも同じだと思いますが、応援して
いると、その時のプレーの素晴らしさももちろんですが、
それよりも、この日を目標に、きっと選手たちは毎日
毎日努力を重ねてきたんだろうなあ、と思って、私は
勝手に感動してしまいます。
それから、応援しに出ていた沿道で、
「向こうから、なんだかかわいい子が歩いてくるな〜」
と思っていたら、向こうもこちらを見ていて、
「Ｑ 先生！」
と声をかけてくれました。
あげはちゃん。
なぜ、リトルであげはちゃんというあだ名で呼ばれて
いたかは、あんまり覚えていませんが(^_^;)
彼女はかわいいだけでなく、性格も本当によくて、
男の子にも女の子にも大人気でした。
英語が好きで、熱心に英会話もやっていた覚えが
あります。
きくと、彼女は高校生の時から大学生間もずっと、
車いすマラソンのボランティアをしてきたと言います。
そして、すでに社会人になった今年も、このためだけ
に東京から帰ってきたそうです。
あげはちゃんらしいなあと思いました。

Lets’s go to Oita. Day３-③
Lets’s go to Oita.
Day３-③
I then walked for two blocks as the boy had said
and came to a large intersection.
I turned left and in less than two minutes I had
found the school.
It was a large, old four-story building with a big
window in the front and a sign that read “Iroha -
2nd floor”.
I then climbed a narrow staircase to the second
floor and found a door marked “Office”.
I knocked on the door and heard a muffled voice
call out from inside, and after entering the room I
found a man and a woman working together at a
desk in the middle of the room.
The woman was very beautiful and as she stood
up to greet me I saw that she was also very tall,
much taller in fact than any other girl I’d seen in
Japan.
I would have guessed that she was well over five
and a half feet.
The man next to her stood up too, and with a
warm smile said:
Man ： Welcome to Iroha. How can I help?
Jack ： Hello. Sorry to interrupt, is Madoka
available?
Man ： Ah, I’m afraid she’s out at present, but
she's supposed to be back any minute.
If you’d like to wait for her, please feel
free to take a seat.
Jack ： Thank you, I will.
As I took a seat, the tall lady went in to an
adjoining room and came back a moment later
with a cup of water which she handed to me,
saying:
Tall lady ： Here you are. Madoka should be
back very soon.
Jack ： Thank you.
Tall lady ： You’re welcome. ……
大分に行こう！
３日目－③
それから僕は、少年が言った通り２ブロック歩いた
ところ、大きな交差点に出た。
左に曲がって、２分しないうちにその学校を見つけた。
それは大きくて、古い４階建てのビルだった。
正面に大きな窓があって、看板には“いろは－２階”と
読めた。
狭い階段を２階まで登ると、“事務所”と記されたドアが
あった。
ノックしたところ、中からこもった声が聞こえてきた。
部屋に入ると、部屋の真ん中にある机に、男性と女性
がいた。
その女性はとても美しかった。
僕に挨拶しようと立ち上がった時、日本で見た他の
どの女の人よりも非常に背が高いのが目に入った。
５.５フィート以上は十分にありそうだ。
彼女の隣に座っている男性も立ち上がり、穏やかな
微笑みを浮かべてこう言った。
男性 ： 「いろは」へようこそ。 何がご用ですか。
ジャック ： こんにちは。 お邪魔してすみません、
まどかさんに会えますか。
男性 ： あの、彼女は今、出掛けていますが、すぐに
戻ってくると思います。
彼女をお待ちになるんでしたら、どうぞ遠慮
なく、おかけになってください。
ジャック ： ありがとうございます、そうします。
腰かけると、背の高い女性が隣の部屋に入って行き、
少しして、飲み物を持って戻ってきた。
それを僕に渡して、言った。
背の高い女性 ： どうぞ。 まどかはすぐに戻ってき
ますよ。
ジャック ： ありがとう。
背の高い女性 ： どういたしまして。

Lets’s go to Oita. Day３-②
Lets’s go to Oita.
Day３-②
The boy paused for a moment, and then said:
Boy ： May I help you?
Jack ： Yes. Thank you. Do you know Iroha
English School?
Boy ： Yes, I do. I am a student of Iroha.
Jack ： What a coincidence! Could you tell me
the way to the school?
Boy ： Go straight on, erm, for two blocks and
umm, you come to a big road.
Uhh, Turn left and go straight. It is on
your left. You can’t miss it.
The boy seemed to be thinking carefully as he
spoke, trying to remember the phrases that he had
learned, and although he spoke hesitantly,
sometimes stopping here and there, on the whole
his English was very good and I could tell that he
was doing his best to help me.
I thanked the boy for his help and told him that
his English was very impressive.
He looked very pleased to hear this and ran back
to join his friends who had been hiding around a
corner and peering at us as we spoke.
大分に行こう！
３日目－②
少年は少し戸惑ったあと、言った。
少年 ： 何か困ってるんですか。
ジャック ： そうです、ありがとう。君はいろはという
英語学校を知ってるかい？
少年 ： はい、知ってます。僕、そこの生徒なんです。
ジャック ： 偶然だね！その学校への行き道を
教えてくれる？
少年 ： まっすぐ行ってください。えーと、２ブロック…、
そしたら大きな通りに出ます。
うーんと…左に曲がって、まっすぐ行ったら、
左側にありますから。すぐ見つかります。
少年は、話しながら、勉強した言葉を思いだそうと、
慎重に考えている様子だった。
ためらいがちに、あちこち途切れながら話しているけど、
全体的には彼の英語はとても上手で、僕の力になろうと
一生懸命なのがわかった。
少年の手助けにお礼を言ってから、英語がとても
すばらしいと伝えた。
それを聞くと彼はとても喜んでいる様子で、角を
曲がったところで、隠れて僕たちの会話を盗み見している
友達のもとへ、走って戻って行った。

Lets’s go to Oita. Day３-①
Lets’s go to Oita.
Day ３-①
The next morning I woke up feeling very
refreshed after an excellent night's sleep
thanks to my new futon.
After a quick shower I got dressed, had
a breakfast of mikans and tea, and thought
about what I should do with the rest of the
day.
I decided that before anything else I should
try to buy a mobile phone again, but this time
with Madoka's help.
As Madoka had mentioned that she thought
her boss at the English school would like to
meet me, I decided to pay her a visit at work.
Checking my pockets, I was relieved to find
that I still had the card she had given me the
day before.
I couldn’t read the kanji on the card very well
but I had studied hiragana before going to
Japan so could see that the school's name was
'Iroha'.
Fortunately on the back of the card was a
rough map and thanks to my exploration of the
neighbourhood I could see that the school was
quite close to my dorm.
I went out on to the street and began to walk
in what I thought was the direction of the school,
however, I hadn’t walked for a few minutes
before I started to doubt whether or not I was
going the right way.
Luckily, I saw a group of three young boys
ahead and approached them to ask for directions.
At first they ran away giggling to each other
when I got close to them but then one of them
came back.
I wondered why he had changed his mind
and thought perhaps he wanted to practice his
English.

３日目－①
翌朝、新しい布団のおかげでぐっすり眠れて、すごく
リフレッシュした気分で目覚めた。
さっとシャワーを浴びて着替え、みかんと紅茶の朝食
をとった。
そして、１日の残りの時間をどう過ごそうかと考えた。
何よりもまず、携帯電話をもう一度買いに行こうと
決めた。
でも今度はまどかの助けが必要だ。
まどかが、英語学校の上司が僕に会いたいと言って
いたので、仕事をしている彼女のところへ行ってみる
ことにした。
ポケットを調べたら、前の日に彼女が僕にくれた
カードがまだあったのを見つけて、ほっとした。
カードに書いてある漢字はあまり読めないが、日本に
来る前にひらがなは勉強した。
だから、その学校の名前が“いろは”だとわかった。
幸運にも、カードの裏に簡単な地図が載っていた。
そして、近所を散歩したおかげで、その学校が寮の
すぐそばにあることがわかった。
通りに出て、学校の方向だと思われる方に歩き始めた。
しかしながら、数分と歩かないうちに正しい道を歩いて
いるのか不安になってきた。
運よく、３人グループの少年を見つけたので、道を
聞こうと近づいた。
僕が近づいたとき、初めは、彼らは互いに笑いながら
走って逃げ出したが、１人が戻ってきた。
なぜ彼は気が変わったんだろうかと不思議に思ったが、
恐らくは英語を話してみたかったんだろう。

Day ２-④
As we stepped back outside in to the warm
sunshine, Madoka said:
Madoka ： I'm terribly sorry but I must be going now,
I have work this afternoon. Will you be
okay getting back to your dorm?
Jack ： I think so but if I have any problems I'll ask
someone for directions.
Thank you so much
for your help today, Madoka.
I really appreciate it.
Madoka ： It was no problem. Here's my card, I'll be
working all day tomorrow but if you need
anything please feel free to contact me.
I'm sure my boss would like to meet you too!
Jack ： Thanks, I will.
As Madoka and I parted ways I felt very lucky to
have been introduced to her, and was already
looking forward to when we would meet again.
As I stood alone in the middle of the city, I decided
to try and buy a mobile phone so that I had some way
of keeping in touch with people and also in case I ever
needed help in an emergency.
I walked a little further in to the arcade and very
quickly found a phone shop.
Once inside, I tried to explain my circumstances to
one of the shop assistants, but much to my
disappointment I was unable to make myself
understood.
The assistant showed me a catalogue, but aside
from the monthly cost I had no idea what each phone
plan offered.
Taking into consideration how complicated it is to
understand phone contracts even in English there
seemed to be little, if any, chance of me being able
to buy a phone on my own and so I decided there
was nothing for it but to give up and go back to my
dormitory to wait for my futon to be delivered.

２日目－④
外の暖かい日差しの中へ戻ってきたところで、
まどかは言った。
まどか ： 申し訳ないけど、行かなくちゃいけないの
午後に仕事があって・・・寮に戻れますか？
ジャック： そう思うけど、もし何かあったら、人に
道を聞きます。
今日は手伝ってくれてありがとう、まどかさん。
本当に感謝します。
まどか ： どういたしまして。
これが私のカードよ。
明日は１日中仕事をしてるけど、何か必要な
ことがあったら、気軽に連絡してくださいね。
私の上司もあなたに会いたがってたわ！
ジャック ： ありがとう、そうします。
まどかと別かれてから、彼女を紹介してもらえたことに
とても感謝した。
そして今からもう、彼女に次に会えるのが楽しみになった。
街の真ん中で、一人きりになると、人と連絡を取る手段と
して、また、緊急で助けが必要な時の用心に、携帯電話を
買おうと決めた。
アーケードの少し奥の方まで歩いていったら、早速、
携帯電話の店が見つかった。
中に入って、店員のひとりに僕の状況を説明しようとしたが、
残念なことに、自分の言うことを理解してもらうことが出来な
かった。
店員は僕にカタログを見せてくれたが、一か月の費用の
ほかに、それぞれのプランがどのようなサービスを提供して
いるのかは理解できなかった。
英語でさえ、電話の契約を理解するのは、とても複雑だ
ということを考えたら、自分で電話を買うなんてとても出来
そうにはなかった。
それで諦めて、寮に戻って布団が配達されるのを待つ
しかないと心に決めた。

残念なことに、自分の言うことを理解してもらうことが出来な
かった。
店員は僕にカタログを見せてくれたが、一か月の費用の
ほかに、それぞれのプランがどのようなサービスを提供して
いるのかは理解できなかった。
英語でさえ、電話の契約を理解するのは、とても複雑だ
ということを考えたら、自分で電話を買うなんてとても出来
そうにはなかった。
それで諦めて、寮に戻って布団が配達されるのを待つ
しかないと心に決めた。

Lets’s go to Oita.
Day ２-③
The shopkeeper then showed me some futons
and explained that they were three-piece sets
that came with a blanket and a pillow too.
He also said that if I bought a set, he would
throw in some sheets for free.
After a few minutes, I had decided on an orange
and red futon which was very soft to the touch,
and turning to the shopkeeper, I said:
Jack ： This one seems good, I’ll take it.
Shopkeeper ： Certainly sir. We offer a free delivery
service for futon sets.
Our deliveries take place every evening
between 7 and 8 o'clock. Is that convenient
for you?
Jack ： That will be fine, thank you.
To tell you the truth, I was a little worried
about how I would carry all this home on my
own!
Shopkeeper ： It's the least we could do.
Remember, If you get cold in winter,
please come back to buy a warm blanket too.
Madoka then wrote down my address for the
shopkeeper, and after I had paid, I thanked the
shopkeeper for his assistance and Madoka and I left
the shop.

２日目－③

Lets’s go to Oita.
DAY ２-②
After I had finished, I made my way back
to my dorm, stopping along the way to buy
a bag of mikans to snack on later.
When I got back I still had some time to kill,
so I relaxed on my bed and studied some
kanji while I waited for Madoka.
Just as she promised, at 10am Madoka
arrived and we walked in to the city together,
passing the shopping street I had visited
earlier that morning.
Surprisingly, we seemed to walk in a straight
line and after only ten minutes or so I noticed
that the buildings around us were becoming
taller and taller, and before I knew it we had
arrived at Oita Station.
Across the street from the station was a
large shopping arcade.
Madoka pointed out a futon shop near to
the entrance of the arcade and explained
that that was the shop that she had wanted
to take me to the previous day.
Crossing the road, we made our way to the
shop and went inside, where we were
greeted by the shopkeeper who said:
Shopkeeper ： Welcome! How may I help
you?
Jack ： Hello. I'd like to buy a futon.
Shopkeeper ： Certainly, sir. What type
of futon are you looking for?
Jack ： What type?
Shopkeeper ： Yes, one for a tatami mat or
one for a bed? A futon for a
tatami mat is softer than a futon
for a bed.
Jack ： Oh, I didn't realise there were
different types. I’m looking for a
futon for a bed, although I have
a concern; As I’m much taller
than most Japanese, do you think
the futon will be big enough for me?
Shopkeeper ： Well, we have two lengths of
futon available.
One is one hundred and ninety
centimetres and the other is two
hundred and ten centimetres.
I'm only a little bit shorter than you
and I sleep on a two hundred and
ten centimetre futon comfortably,
so I think it should be fine for you too.
Jack ： That's very helpful, thank you for your advice.
Your English is very impressive, by the way.
Shopkeeper ： That's very kind of you to say.
We have lots of foreign students from
APU come here to buy futons, so I've
had a lot of practice. As a matter of fact,
they often buy the longer size too.
How much are you looking to spend,
by the way?
Jack ： I will only be in Japan for a year so the
cheaper the better.

２日目－①
食事をすませて、寮に戻る途中、あとで食べようと
みかんをひと袋買った。
戻るとまだ時間があったので、ベッドの上で
くつろいだ。
そして、まどかを待つ間、漢字を少し勉強した。
約束どおり、まどかは朝10時にやって来た。
私たちは、朝行った商店街を通りながら、一緒に街
まで歩いて行った。
まっすぐ歩いていたと思うが、１０分ほど経ってから
気づいたのが、驚いたことに、僕たちの周りにある
建物がだんだん高くなってきている。
気づいてみると、大分駅に着いていた。
駅の向かい側には、大きなショッピングアーケードが
あった。
まどかはアーケードの入り口近くの布団屋を指さして、
先日僕を連れて行きたかった店だと説明した。
道路を渡り、店に向い、中に入ると、店主が挨拶して
きた。
店主 ： ようこそ！いらっしゃいませ。
ジャック ： こんにちは。布団を買いたいのですが。
店主 ： かしこまりました。どのような布団をお探し
ですか。
ジャック ： どのような？
店主 ： はい、畳用とベッド用のどちらでしょうか。
畳用の布団はベッド用の布団より柔らかいんです。
ジャック ： へえ、いろんな種類があるなんて知らなかった。
ベッド用の布団を探しているんですが、気に
なっていることがあります。
僕は多くの日本人より背が高いから、僕に
十分な大きさの布団がありますか。
店主 ： ふたつの長さのふとんをご用意しています。
ひとつは１９０cmで、もうひとつは２１０cmです。
私はお客様よりわずかばかり背が低いだけです
から、２１０cmの布団で快適に眠ていますので、
お客様にもよろしいかと思います。
ジャック ： とても参考になりました。
アドバイスをありがとう。
ところで、あなたの英語はとてもすばらしい
ですね。
店主 ： そう言って頂いて、ありがとうございます。
ＡＰＵから、たくさんの外国の学生さんが、当店へ

Lets’s go to Oita. Day ２-①
Lets’s go to Oita.
DAY ２-①
The next morning I woke up very early, and
unfortunately, in spite of how tired I had been
I found it almost impossible to sleep without
a pillow.
After such a poor night's sleep I was really
looking forward to going with Madoka to buy
a futon, but as I had some time to kill before
she arrived I decided to explore my new
neighbourhood and find a café or shop to get
some breakfast at.
Leaving my apartment, I was pleased to find
that it was a beautiful day.
There wasn’t a single cloud to be seen.
Unfortunately, eager as I was to explore, I wasn’t
sure which road to take to get to the nearest
shopping street, and not knowing what to do
I decided to try to ask someone.
Looking around there was no one to be seen,
but luckily, it was not too long before I spotted
a beautiful girl coming towards me.
I walked up to her, and said:
Jack ： Excuse me, I’d like to go towards the
nearest shopping street. Is this the right
direction?
Girl ： Y-yes, that’s right. Go straight ahead and...
turn left at the third corner.
Jack ： Thanks a lot.
Girl ： You’re welcome.
The girl seemed to be a little surprised, perhaps
because I approached her speaking in English,
but she spoke very well and had a wonderful smile.
I wondered if all Japanese girls were so pretty and
helpful.
I followed the girls directions and after a few minutes
I arrived at a street lined with cafés, florists and
greengrocers.
I went in to a small bakery and bought a croissant
and a bottle of orange juice, and as I left, I spotted
a small shrine across the road.
I went over to the shrine to take a look around, and
in the garden of the shrine I found a small pond with
some benches next to it, which I decided was as
good a place as any to take a rest and enjoy my
breakfast.

次の日の朝、早く目が覚めてしまった。
残念ながら、どんなに疲れていても枕がないと眠れ
ないようだ。
そんなひどい夜の眠りの後だから、まどかと布団を
買いに行くのを本当に楽しみにしていた。
しかし、彼女が来るまで時間をつぶさないといけない
ので、近所を探検して、朝食を食べられるカフェか店を
見つけようと決めた。
アパートを出ると、いい天気とわかってうれしくなった。
雲ひとつなかった。
一生懸命探してみたが、残念ながら、一番近くの商店街
へも、どの道を行ったらいいかわからなかった。
どうしたらいいかわからないので、誰かに聞いてみる
ことにした。
見回しても誰もいなかったが、ラッキーなことに、こっちに
向かって歩いてくるかわいい女の子をすぐに見つけた。
女の子のほうに歩いて行って、こう言った。
ジャック ： すいません、一番近くの商店街に行きたいん
です。この方向で合ってますか。
女の子 ： え、はい。合ってますよ。
まっすぐ行って…３番目の角を左に曲がって
ください。
ジャック ： どうもありがとう。
女の子 ： どういたしまして。
英語で話しかけながら近づいて行ったから、女の子は
ちょっとびっくりしたようだった。
でも彼女はとても上手に話していたし、素敵な笑顔だった。
日本人の女の子はみんな、そんなにかわいくて親切
なんだろうか。
彼女が言っていた方向へ向かって数分後、カフェや
花屋、八百屋などが並んでいる通りに着いた。
僕は小さなパン屋に入って、クロワッサンとオレンジ
ジュースを買った。
店を出ると、通りの向こうに小さな神社があるのを見
つけた。
中を見て回ろうと神社に行ったら、境内で、そばに
ベンチがおいてある小さな池を見つけた。
休憩して朝食を食べるのには最適な場所だ。

Lets’s go to Oita. Day １-②
Lets’s go to Oita.
Day １-②
Madoka then helped me with my bags and once they
were loaded into her car we began our drive to Oita
University's International House.
As we drove an awkward silence began to develop
and I quickly tried to think of something to say:
Jack ： So, what are you studying?
Madoka ： My major is English. I'd like to be an
English teacher when I graduate. In fact,
over the summer vacation I've been working
at an English school. I really want to practice
speaking English as much as I can, so being
your tutor is a great chance for me.
Jack ： I don't speak very much Japanese, but really
want to know more about Oita, so it's a great
chance for me too! Do you live on campus?
Madoka ： No, in fact, I live in an apartment about
5 minutes away from your dorm.
Jack ： Oh, so we're almost neighbours then!
I felt very relaxed in Madoka's company, and in no time
at all we had arrived at the dorm. My room was on the
fourth floor and had a great view of Oita City as well as
some mountains in the distance.
The room itself was comfortable and almost everything
was arranged for me to start my new life except for odds
and ends like bedding, kitchen utensils, a rice cooker
and so on.
Of course, most of the furniture looked like it had seen
better days, but I didn't mind, and I looked forward to
making myself at home.
As I put my bags on the bed, I realised that there were
no blankets, just a bare mattress.
Turning to Madoka, I asked:
Jack ： Are the bed covers kept under the bed, or
somewhere else?
Madoka ： Actually... the rooms here don't come with
any bed covers.
I was hoping to take you to buy some after I
met you at the station, but by the time your
train arrived the shops had already closed.
Jack ： Oh... well, it's okay. It's nice and warm tonight,
and I'm so tired from travelling that I think I
could even sleep on the floor if I had to!
Madoka : I hope you won't be too uncomfortable.
I know a nice futon shop near the station.
I'll take you tomorrow if you'd like.
Jack ： That would be great! Thanks.
Are you sure it isn't any trouble?
Madoka ： No, not at all. I'll come back here and meet
you tomorrow morning, how does 10 o'clock
sound?
Jack ： That sounds great. I'm looking forward to
it already.
Madoka ： Okay, well, it's already quite late so I'll let
you rest now and I'll be back in the morning.
Jack ： Thanks Madoka. See you tomorrow.

１日目－②
まどかは荷物を車に載せるのを手伝ってくれて、
それらを積み終わると、車は大分大学のインター
ナショナルハウスへ向かって走り始めた。
移動中、沈黙で気まずくなってきたので、急いで
何か言おうと思った。
ジャック ： そういえば、あなたは何を勉強している
んですか。
まどか ： 私の専攻は英語で、卒業したら英語の先生
になりたいんです。
実は、夏休みの間、英語学校で働いているん
です。
出来るだけたくさん、英語を勉強したいから、
あなたの家庭教師になるのはとてもいいチャンス
なんですよ。
ジャック ： 僕は、日本語を多くは話せないけど、大分に
ついてもっと知りたいから、僕にとっても大きな
チャンスです！あなたは大学の構内に住んで
いるのですか？
まどか ： いいえ、実は、私はあなたの寮から５分くらい
離れたアパートに住んでいるんですよ。
ジャック ： へー、じゃあ僕たちはご近所さんですね！
まどかと一緒にいるととても落ち着いた。
そしてまもなく寮に着いた。
私の部屋は４階で、大分の街並みが見渡せたし、遠くには
山並みも見えた。
部屋は快適で、寝具や台所用品、炊飯器などの小物を
除いて、新生活を始めるすべてのものが揃えられていた。
もちろん、家具のほとんどは昔はすごく立派だったもので、
今は少し古びていたが、でも僕は気にならなかったし、部屋で
くつろぐのが待ち遠しかった。
ベッドの上にバッグを置いた時に、むきだしのマットレスだけ
で毛布がないことに気がついた。
まどかの方へ振り返って聞いた：
ジャック ： ベッドカバーはベッドの下かどこかにありますか。
まどか ： それが…部屋にはベッドカバーがついてないん
です。
駅であなたと会った後に、買いに連れて行きた
かったんだけど、電車が着く頃には、もうお店が
閉まっていたんです。
ジャック ： わかりました。今夜は暖かいし、旅で疲れてる
から、寝ようと思えば床でも寝れると思うな！
まどか ： ひどい寝心地じゃなければいいけど。駅の近くに
良い布団屋さんがあるのを知ってるから、よければ
明日連れて行きますよ。
ジャック ： それはいいね！ありがとう。面倒じゃないですか？
まどか ： ぜんぜん。明日の朝、迎えに来ます。１０時はどう？
ジャック ： いいね、今から楽しみです。
まどか ： わかりました。じゃあ、もう遅いから休んで
くださいね。朝にまた来ます。
ジャック ： まどか、ありがとう。明日会いましょう。

Day １-②
Madoka then helped me with my bags and once they
were loaded into her car we began our drive to Oita
University's International House.
As we drove an awkward silence began to develop
and I quickly tried to think of something to say:
Jack ： So, what are you studying?
Madoka ： My major is English. I'd like to be an
English teacher when I graduate. In fact,
over the summer vacation I've been working
at an English school. I really want to practice
speaking English as much as I can, so being
your tutor is a great chance for me.
Jack ： I don't speak very much Japanese, but really
want to know more about Oita, so it's a great
chance for me too! Do you live on campus?
Madoka ： No, in fact, I live in an apartment about
5 minutes away from your dorm.
Jack ： Oh, so we're almost neighbours then!
I felt very relaxed in Madoka's company, and in no time
at all we had arrived at the dorm. My room was on the
fourth floor and had a great view of Oita City as well as
some mountains in the distance.
The room itself was comfortable and almost everything
was arranged for me to start my new life except for odds
and ends like bedding, kitchen utensils, a rice cooker
and so on.
Of course, most of the furniture looked like it had seen
better days, but I didn't mind, and I looked forward to
making myself at home.
As I put my bags on the bed, I realised that there were
no blankets, just a bare mattress.
Turning to Madoka, I asked:
Jack ： Are the bed covers kept under the bed, or
somewhere else?
Madoka ： Actually... the rooms here don't come with
any bed covers.
I was hoping to take you to buy some after I
met you at the station, but by the time your
train arrived the shops had already closed.
Jack ： Oh... well, it's okay. It's nice and warm tonight,
and I'm so tired from travelling that I think I
could even sleep on the floor if I had to!
Madoka : I hope you won't be too uncomfortable.
I know a nice futon shop near the station.
I'll take you tomorrow if you'd like.
Jack ： That would be great! Thanks.
Are you sure it isn't any trouble?
Madoka ： No, not at all. I'll come back here and meet
you tomorrow morning, how does 10 o'clock
sound?
Jack ： That sounds great. I'm looking forward to
it already.
Madoka ： Okay, well, it's already quite late so I'll let
you rest now and I'll be back in the morning.
Jack ： Thanks Madoka. See you tomorrow.
大分に行こう！
１日目－②
まどかは荷物を車に載せるのを手伝ってくれて、
それらを積み終わると、車は大分大学のインター
ナショナルハウスへ向かって走り始めた。
移動中、沈黙で気まずくなってきたので、急いで
何か言おうと思った。
ジャック ： そういえば、あなたは何を勉強している
んですか。
まどか ： 私の専攻は英語で、卒業したら英語の先生
になりたいんです。
実は、夏休みの間、英語学校で働いているん
です。
出来るだけたくさん、英語を勉強したいから、
あなたの家庭教師になるのはとてもいいチャンス
なんですよ。
ジャック ： 僕は、日本語を多くは話せないけど、大分に
ついてもっと知りたいから、僕にとっても大きな
チャンスです！あなたは大学の構内に住んで
いるのですか？
まどか ： いいえ、実は、私はあなたの寮から５分くらい
離れたアパートに住んでいるんですよ。
ジャック ： へー、じゃあ僕たちはご近所さんですね！
まどかと一緒にいるととても落ち着いた。
そしてまもなく寮に着いた。
私の部屋は４階で、大分の街並みが見渡せたし、遠くには
山並みも見えた。
部屋は快適で、寝具や台所用品、炊飯器などの小物を
除いて、新生活を始めるすべてのものが揃えられていた。
もちろん、家具のほとんどは昔はすごく立派だったもので、
今は少し古びていたが、でも僕は気にならなかったし、部屋で
くつろぐのが待ち遠しかった。
ベッドの上にバッグを置いた時に、むきだしのマットレスだけ
で毛布がないことに気がついた。
まどかの方へ振り返って聞いた：
ジャック ： ベッドカバーはベッドの下かどこかにありますか。
まどか ： それが…部屋にはベッドカバーがついてないん
です。
駅であなたと会った後に、買いに連れて行きた
かったんだけど、電車が着く頃には、もうお店が
閉まっていたんです。
ジャック ： わかりました。今夜は暖かいし、旅で疲れてる
から、寝ようと思えば床でも寝れると思うな！

Lets’s go to Oita. Day １-①
最近は外国から多くの旅行者が訪れています。
これらの人たちに大分を紹介できたらと思い、
『Let’s go to Oita』 というストーリを作ってみました。
この話はあるイギリス人が大分大学に留学に来て、
大分を見て歩くという話です。
こういった外国からの旅行者に大分のよさを
少しでも知ってもらえればいいなーと思っています。
そしてさらに多くの旅行者がこの地を訪れてくれれば
いいなーと思っています。
またこの話を作る際に、多くの人のご協力をいただき
ました。
この場を利用して、御礼もうしあげたいと思ってい
ます。
Lets’s go to Oita.
Day １-①
Before I arrived in Japan, Oita University had arranged
for one of their students to act as my tutor and help me
prepare for my new life in Japan.
My tutor's name was Madoka Satou.
We had exchanged one or two e-mails introducing ourselves
before I left England, and I was looking forward to meeting
her once I arrived in Japan.
After a 15 hour flight, I finally arrived at Fukuoka Airport,
the first step of my new life in Japan.
After completing the immigration checks and collecting my
luggage I left the airport and took the subway to Hakata Station.
From there, I booked a one way Rapid Express ticket to Oita
Station, and used a public computer to e-mail Madoka and let
her know what time I would arrive.
For some reason, I suddenly felt very nervous about meeting
Madoka for the first time!
That night I arrived in Oita, and as I passed through the ticket
barrier and entered the station it suddenly dawned on me that
I had no idea what Madoka looked like, and I wondered how
in the world I would find her amongst the crowd at the station.
As I looked around, unsure of what to do next, a beautiful
young girl approached me.
Madoka ： Excuse me, is your name Jack?
Jack ： Yes! Madoka?
Madoka ： Yes, that’s right. Welcome to Oita.
Jack ： Thank you, it's nice to meet you... I mean, “hajimemashite”.
Madoka ： It's nice to meet you too. How was your flight?
Jack ： Long!
Madoka ： I bet, England is very far from Japan. You must be tired.
Jack ： A little, but mostly I feel excited to be here.
Madoka ： That's good to hear. Shall we go to your dormitory?
Jack ： Sure, I've been looking forward to seeing my new home.
Madoka ： Okay, follow me. My car is parked just outside.

大分に行こう！
１日目－①
僕が日本に行く前に、大分大学が、学生のひとりを
私の家庭教師として手配してくれて、そのひとが、
日本での新しい生活の準備を手伝ってくれるように
なっていた。
家庭教師の名前は、佐藤まどかさん。
イギリスを離れる前に、私たちはお互いを紹介する
メールを１、２通交換してた。
だから日本に着いたら、僕は彼女に会えるのを
楽しみにしていたのだ。
１５時間のフライトのあと、やっと、福岡空港に着いた。
日本での新生活の第一歩だ。
入国審査を終わらせて荷物を受け取ったあと、空港を
出て、博多駅までの地下鉄に乗った。
そこから大分駅行きの片道特急券を予約し、公共の
パソコンを使ってまどかへメールをして、何時ごろ着くか
知らせた。
なぜか急に、まどかに初めて会うんだと思うと、緊張が
高まって来た！
夜になって、大分に着き、改札口を通り抜けて駅に入ると、
突然、まどかって、一体、どんな人なんだろう、そんなこと
知らないぞと思い始めた。
一体どうやって、駅の人ごみの中で彼女を見つけたらいい
んだろう。
次にどうしたらいいのか わからなくなって、周りを
きょろきょろしていたら、若くてきれいな女の子が近づいて
きた。
まどか ： すみません、あなたのお名前はジャックですか。
ジャック ： はい！（あなたは）まどかさん？
まどか ： はい、そうです。大分へようこそ。
ジャック ： ありがとう、はじめまして…いや、“ハジメマシテ”。
まどか ： はじめまして。飛行機での旅はどうでしたか。
ジャック ： 長かったですよ！
まどか ： たしかに、イギリスはとても遠いですからね・・・。
お疲れになったでしょう。
ジャック ： ええ、少し。でも、ここへ来れてわくわくですよ。
まどか ： それを聞いて、安心だわ。さあ、寮に向かいま
しょうか。
ジャック ： はい、新しい我が家に会えるのを楽しみにして
いたんです。
まどか ： オッケイ、ついて来て。外に私の車を停めてあるの。

これらの人たちに大分を紹介できたらと思い、
